According to recent statistics, at least two to three pets die every week in the U.S. due to suffocation caused by a chip or other type of snack bag. It takes less than 5 minutes for a dog or cat to die from bag suffocation. Once they start breathing harder trying to get out, it actually suctions the bag, and there is no turning back.
This is a really horrible way to lose a pet, but a very easy one to avoid.
1. CUT YOUR EMPTY BAGS
Before you throw out the bag cut it lengthwise to prevent any possibility of suffocation.
2. SAFELY STORE YOUR CHIP AND OTHER BAGS
Store any opened chips or other bagged goodies in a secure, safe place where curious, hungry pets can’t get to them. I keep all opened cips, etc in a cabinet that my dog can not get open.
